The decision by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) to raid a high-profile former officer is unprecedented in the agency’s recent history and has divided Australia’s intelligence community.
In February 2024, ASIO and the Australian Federal Police raided the home and office of former intelligence officer Neil Fergus, seizing his phones and laptops.
The operation was reportedly linked to Fergus’s private investigation into a Russian mole within ASIO during the 1990s and 2000s, specifically concerning ex-ASIO officer Ian George Peacock, identified posthumously as a KGB traitor.
Fergus, who claims he had ASIO’s authorisation for his probe, has lodged a complaint with the national intelligence watchdog, seeking an explanation and apology for the raids.
