The ban on DeepSeek AI in Australia is not just about general cybersecurity risks. It represents a significant insider risk concern, particularly regarding data exfiltration and foreign intelligence exploitation.
Given DeepSeek’s ties to China, there is a heightened risk that government employees or contractors could inadvertently or deliberately use the tool to process sensitive information, which may then be captured and stored offshore.
This creates vulnerabilities for insider-facilitated espionage, data leakage, and unauthorised intelligence gathering, making the ban a necessary step in mitigating insider risks at a national level.
